As an artist, Michael Ferro finds endless inspiration amongst Chicago’s many historic buildings.
In the center of Chicago, the past and present intersect through the city’s stunning architecture. As an avid urban sketcher, the juxtaposition of old and new fascinates Michael. He walks through the streets with a sketchbook in hand, feeling the history and energy Chicago is known for. He enjoys capturing the essence of the city’s unique architecture in his sketchbook.
Art Deco
The art deco style is a key focal point in Chicago’s architectural heritage. Michael loves walking along the riverfront to admire these buildings that the city is known for. The striking patterns, geometry, and opulence give the city a unique aesthetic.
Some of Michael’s favorite buildings of this era include:
- The Carbide & Carbon Building (designed by the Burnham Brothers, completed 1929)
- Civic Opera Building (designed by GAP&W, completed 1929)
- Adler Planetarium (designed by Ernhest Grunsfield Jr., completed 1930)
- The Rookery (designed by Burnham & Root, completed 1888)
The Chicago Bungalow
The Chicago Bungalow is an iconic example of suburban architecture outside of the city center. These humble homes stand as an excellent example of quality craftsmanship. These homes may not have the opulence of Chicago’s art deco buildings. However, they have an inviting charm to them that Michael loves to capture in his drawings.
Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. You can find many examples of his buildings throughout Chicago today. His architectural style was uniquely midwestern. This gives the city a unique sense of place which Michael reflects in his urban sketches.
Some of his most iconic buildings include:
- The Auditorium Building. Wright worked on the interior design for this building as an apprentice with Ardler and Sulivan
- The Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio, located in Oak Park.
- Unity Temple, a universalist church in Oak Park
Modern Architecture
Despite the countless historic buildings, Chicago has some incredible examples of modern architecture. These contemporary buildings showcase the city’s forward thinking attitude and provide contrast to the older structures.
Some of Michaels favorite modern buildings include:
- The Lincoln Park Zoo’s South Pond, designed by Studio Gang
- The Aqua Tower, designed by Studio Gang
- The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry
